In a semi-Official note I acknowledged the receipt of his statement reminding him at the same time of what he had mentioned at Council as to his wish also to record his explanation of leaving signed the address to Mr Keswick which reflected on Crown Colony Government.
When this has been done, and the Attorney General's observations on the point were also recorded in the minutes, I will consult with the Council as to D. Stewart's proposal to relieve him from the obligation of seeing every attachment to the proceedings of the Executive Council.
Meantime I cannot refuse D. Stewart's application to relieve him from the duties of Acting Colonial Treasurer.
Official information has just reached me that the Colonial Secretary's leave of absence has been extended for six months; and, on the whole, it will be proper and convenient to the public service that Dr Stewart should take the permanent appointment to which he has been duly gazetted, of Police Magistrate, and relieve the Superintendent of the Gaol of the functions of Acting Police Magistrate. I may mention that a few weeks ago I had a conversation with one of my chief Officials on the alleged illegality of the Superintendent of the ...
